We are currently working on the 2019 Harry C. Moore Memorial Basketball Classic. Watch for updates soon!
Welcome to the Harry C. Moore Memorial Basketball Tournament
After 13 years the Harry C. Moore Memorial Basketball Tournament took a couple years to restructure. We are currently planning the 2019 Harry C. Moore Classic to be played in mid-December 2019. Check back here in the future to see the developments.
We are honored to be able to carry on the traditions established by Coach Moore. Recognition is given to one of his former players, a woman who has been influential to female sports in the Thumb of Michigan, and community members from participating communities. A $500 scholarship is awarded to one senior boy and girl from teams participating in the tournament.
Join us each year between, in December, as we pay honor to the man that lived by a simple mantra, "Do your best." The dates for this year's tournament are December 13-14, 2019.
A History of Harry Moore
Harry attended Central Michigan University. It was there that he caught the eye of Danny Rose during an intramural basketball game. Dan Rose asked Harry to become a member of the basketball team at Central. He was already playing on the CMU baseball team so he was used to being busy. After graduating Harry spent two years in Germany, with the Occupation Army, before coming home to begin teaching and coaching.
Harry took a position at Capac High School. It was there that he spent his entire teaching and coaching career. He was the athletic director at Capac for many years. In all of his involvements his heart truly laid in the gym with that orange ball.
Harry started teaching and coaching basketball (he also coached football, baseball, and golf during his career) in 1955. It took a couple years but the town of Capac became quite proud of their basketball program that was known state-wide. At the end of the 1963 season each of the starting five was recognized as All-Blue Water Area and the team was ranked #1 in Class C. Harry retired after the 1971 season to concentrate on his other athletic position. He spent 20+ years as the athletic director for Capac Community Schools.
On May 11, 1986, Harry passed away after a five year battle with cancer. He spent his entire 30-year career at Capac. Harry taught social studies and physical education for most of his career. Though he loved the classroom he also spent time as the assistant principal. Others tried to lure him but his heart was in Capac.
Truly More Important
With the successes on the basketball court and on the field of competition it was another factor that inspired him to continue. Each year, each young man was expected to grow into a gentleman. Harry Moore expected his student/athletes to gain character by their association with him.
He taught boys to become men!
We would like to thank Brown City, Capac, Kingston, and North Branch schools for participating in this tournament in the past. We look forward to new participants in 2019. The Moore family considers this tribute an honor to the man we think about each day. It is nice to know that Harry made such an impact on so many people that this basketball tournament was conceived. As part of this event a $500 scholarship will be awarded. The honorees associated with the tournament have all exhibited the characteristics of living life as Harry expected.
